This initiative is inspired by Nordic social welfare models, although critics argue that Sanders' plan diverges significantly from these models. The proposal suggests that the government would not only own a substantial portion of these companies but also have seats on their corporate boards. Sanders cites the sovereign wealth funds of Norway and Alaska as examples, though these funds are typically supported by budget surpluses, a condition not met by the U.S. due to its significant national debt.
