Meta Unveils Glimmer Model for Personal AI, Enhancing User Privacy
Meta has introduced Glimmer, a new AI model designed to operate locally on consumer devices, such as Mac or PC computers, using a single ordinary consumer GPU. This model supports text and images and has been trained in over one hundred languages. Glimmer processes users' personal data directly on their devices, ensuring privacy by not sending data to cloud servers. This feature allows users to manage plans, draft messages, and organize files without an internet connection. The release of Glimmer aligns with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg's vision of distributing AI capabilities widely, empowering individuals rather than concentrating power in a few companies. While the more powerful Muse Spark model remains closed, Glimmer is open-source, allowing developers to modify it under the Apache 2.0 license.
