Senator King Leads Call for ICE Accountability Following Fatal Shootings
Senator Angus King, along with 38 other senators, has called for increased accountability measures for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. This follows fatal shootings by ICE agents in Biddeford, Maine, and Houston, Texas. The senators addressed a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, urging the department to fulfill its commitments on ICE officer oversight. The letter highlights the deaths of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo and Joan Sebastian Durán Guerrero, who were not the intended targets of immigration enforcement. The senators demand independent investigations and a review of enforcement protocols. They criticize the lack of body cameras on DHS officials involved in the shootings and call for immediate reforms to restore public trust.
