Flash Flood Emergency Declared in North Carolina Foothills
A flash flood emergency was declared in the northern Foothills of North Carolina, affecting areas from Pilot Mountain to Mount Airy. The Ararat River reached major flood stage early Sunday morning, prompting water rescues of stranded motorists. The flooding resulted from thunderstorms that brought heavy rainfall, with 5 to 10 inches falling in a narrow band. The National Weather Service reported that the river crested at nearly 29 feet, and while it is receding, many roads remain impassable due to water and debris. The situation remains precarious, with additional rainfall expected to pose further flash flood threats.
