NYC Homeownership Analysis Reveals Dominance of Married Couples Outside Manhattan
A recent analysis of Census Bureau data by real estate data firm PropertyShark indicates that married couples constitute the majority of homeowners in New York City, with the exception of Manhattan. While the overall homeownership rate in NYC is 33%, significantly lower than the U.S. national average of 65%, married-couple families make up 51% of property owners across the city. This trend is most pronounced in Staten Island, where approximately 60% of property owners are married couples. Brooklyn and Queens also show a strong presence of married homeowners, at around 53% each, while the Bronx has 41%. In contrast, Manhattan is the only borough where non-family owners, at nearly 48%, outnumber married-couple families, who comprise 45% of homeowners. The study highlights specific neighborhoods where married couples are particularly prevalent, such as Mill Basin in Brooklyn, where about 75% of homeowners are married couples, and several areas in Staten Island like Concord (74.5%) and Charleston (73.2%).
