Iowa Gubernatorial Candidate Rob Sand Advocates for Increased Cancer Research Funding Amid Opposition
Rob Sand, the Democratic candidate for Iowa governor in 2026, has expressed his support for increasing funding for pediatric cancer research and raising taxes on tobacco and nicotine products. Speaking at an event organized by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network in Des Moines, Sand emphasized the need for bipartisan cooperation to address rising cancer rates in Iowa. He criticized his opponent, Republican nominee Zach Lahn, for opposing mRNA vaccines and supporting federal cuts to cancer research funding. Sand highlighted the recent approval of a $3 million funding initiative by the Iowa Legislature, funded by a 5-cent tax on vapes and alternative nicotine products, but noted that this amount is insufficient compared to other states like Nebraska.
