Severe Coastal Erosion Forces Closures at Malibu's Point Dume Beach
Malibu's iconic Point Dume Beach has suffered significant damage due to severe coastal erosion caused by powerful southerly swells generated by Hurricane Genevieve. Waves measuring 5 to 7 feet, combined with dangerous rip currents and coastal flooding, have carved away sections of the bluff, creating drop-offs as steep as 8 feet in some areas. Los Angeles County officials have closed Westward Beach Road beyond the toll gate and the Point Dume Beach parking lot, citing safety concerns. Temporary chemical toilets and hand-washing stations have been installed after the erosion damaged a water line serving public restrooms.
