Virginia Army National Guard pilot Jo Ellis, a transgender woman, is facing significant backlash for publicly expressing views that diverge from many mainstream transgender advocacy positions. Ellis believes that gender dysphoria is a mental illness, that transgender women may have advantages in women's sports, and advocates for caution regarding gender-affirming care for minors. These statements, made in a podcast and on social media, have drawn sharp criticism from her Instagram followers and other transgender individuals, including a veteran who stated Ellis is "fueling the fire that will ultimately consume her along with the rest of the trans community." Ellis, who began her transition in 2023, previously gained public attention after being falsely accused of involvement in a deadly helicopter crash, leading to a defamation lawsuit that is currently proceeding.
