Chinati Foundation to Restore Artillery Sheds Housing Donald Judd's Aluminum Works in Marfa, Texas
The Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas, is embarking on a significant restoration project for its Artillery Sheds, which house Donald Judd’s '100 untitled works in mill aluminum.' These two former military buildings have suffered over four decades of weathering, necessitating extensive repairs. Houston-based Schaum Architects will lead the restoration efforts. The scope of work includes repairing vaulted roofs, facades, gutters, and over 10,000 square feet of glazing. Additionally, a new roof-bracing system will be installed, developed in collaboration with TYLin. The project also aims to implement a low-energy ventilation system, improved glazing, and on-site solar power to regulate temperatures, moving away from conventional air conditioning. Landscape upgrades are planned to enhance drainage and incorporate rainwater harvesting. A crucial aspect of the project involves the temporary removal of Judd’s 100 aluminum works, marking their first relocation from the sheds since 1986.
