HMP Northumberland Introduces Hamster Therapy to Calm Violent Prisoners
HMP Northumberland, a Category C men's prison in the UK, has introduced a pet-care area featuring a hamster named Robinson to help calm violent prisoners. This initiative is part of a broader effort to provide therapeutic interventions for inmates, particularly those at risk of self-harm or violence. The Independent Monitoring Board reported that the pet-care area, which also includes a flock of chickens, serves as a tool for de-escalation and allows prisoners to demonstrate their capacity for care. The program is designed to help inmates manage anger and develop empathy by caring for animals. Similar initiatives have been implemented in other prisons, such as HMP Guys Marsh and HMP Swaleside, where animals like hens and pygmy goats are used to support mental health and rehabilitation efforts.
