Europe's Heatwave Forces Italy to Issue Red Alert and Hungary to Conserve Energy
Italy has placed all its major cities on the highest health alert level due to extreme heat, while Hungary has turned off lights at prominent buildings to conserve energy. The heatwave has caused record-breaking temperatures and wildfires across Europe, with France and Spain particularly affected. The European Union is urging member countries to invest more in wildfire risk reduction as the economic cost of the blazes has exceeded €15 billion. In Hungary, low water levels on the Danube have forced the country to reduce output at its nuclear power plant, stretching power supply capacity to its limits.
