United Nations Development Programme Supports Deforestation-Free Cacao Production in Colombia

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is supporting cacao farmers in Colombia to implement a traceability system for deforestation-free cacao. This initiative, backed by UNDP's Inverpaz, Climate Promise, and UN-REDD Programme, in collaboration with Swisscontact, helps farmers map their farms, record planting and production practices, and track the supply chain. The Tumaco Chocolate Association is leading this effort, ensuring compliance with the European Union Regulation on Deforestation-free Products. The goal is to enable Colombian cacao to be sold to international markets, providing consumers with chocolate bars that can trace the origin of their cacao and confirm it was produced without contributing to deforestation. This system aims to improve production systems for many farmers in rural Colombia, strengthening their income and supporting ecosystem protection.
