Cuba's Power Restoration Amid Ongoing Economic Challenges
Power has been restored to Havana and other parts of western Cuba following a grid failure. The outage affected five of Cuba's 15 provinces, leaving them without electricity for much of the night. The state-run electric company, UNE, attributed the failure to a 'partial collapse' of the grid, exacerbated by fuel shortages due to a US-imposed blockade. The ongoing economic crisis in Cuba has led to frequent blackouts, with five nationwide outages occurring since the start of 2026. The Cuban government blames US sanctions for the grid's vulnerability, while the US cites mismanagement by the Cuban government.
