Prenatal COVID-19 Exposure Not Broadly Linked to Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Study Finds
A large Norwegian cohort study has found that prenatal exposure to COVID-19 is not broadly associated with an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children. The study, which included 204,663 children born between March 2020 and December 2023, examined eight outcomes, including autism, motor disorders, intellectual disorders, and various neurological disorders. Of these children, 16,325 (8.0%) were exposed to maternal COVID-19 during pregnancy. The research, published in JAMA Network Open, utilized data from national registries covering maternal background, birth characteristics, prenatal COVID-19 exposure, and neurodevelopmental and neurological diagnoses.
