Environmentalists Sue Over Ongoing Damage at Former 'Alligator Alcatraz' Site in Everglades
Environmental groups, including Friends of the Everglades and the Center for Biological Diversity, have renewed their legal challenge against the state of Florida regarding the former 'Alligator Alcatraz' migrant detention center. Despite Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announcing the center's closure in June, environmentalists contend that the demobilization process has caused further environmental harm to the Greater Everglades, the Big Cypress National Preserve, and the Big Cypress Area. They claim that large piles of asphalt and debris remain on site, with loose aggregate material being spread, piled, and moved. Additionally, 20 acres of new pavement and other features like trenches and rebar are still present.
