Panama Canal Authority Suspends Auction for Close-in Transit Slots Amid Hydrological Concerns
The Panama Canal Authority has announced a temporary suspension of the auction process for 'Period 3' transit slots, which are typically offered 96 to 48 hours before the transit time. This decision is a response to current hydrological conditions and is part of the Authority's efforts to manage water resources effectively. The 'Period 3' slots are highly competitive, often commanding high prices due to their appeal to vessels operating on tight schedules without pre-arranged slots. The suspension affects two out of 36 daily transit slots, representing just under six percent of the Canal's capacity. The decision comes amid increased traffic at the Canal, driven by disruptions in the Middle East and high demand for LNG exports from the U.S. The Panama Canal Authority has not suspended auctions for Neopanamax transit slots and plans to continue holding Extraordinary Auctions when necessary.
