Vietnamese Police Arrest 12 in Cat Meat Trafficking Ring
Police in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, have arrested 12 individuals suspected of operating a citywide network involved in stealing and reselling approximately 2,700 cats for meat. The alleged leader of the network, 39-year-old Luu Thanh Binh, and 11 others are under investigation for theft. The operation involved individuals riding motorcycles through residential areas between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m., trapping four to ten cats nightly. Binh reportedly bought the stolen cats, housed them at a facility in the city's north, and then resold them for meat. While the consumption of cat meat is not unique to Vietnam and has been practiced in parts of Asia, it is not common and has seen a decline with increasing pet ownership. Police raided the network on July 8, confiscating about 50 cats and numerous traps. Thirteen of the confiscated cats were returned to their owners, while a nonprofit animal rights group is caring for the others.
