GLP-1 Drugs Linked to Weight Loss and Potential Hair Loss in U.S. Adults
GLP-1 drugs, initially developed for diabetes treatment, have become widely used in the U.S. for weight loss, with an estimated 15 million American adults having used them in the past year. These medications, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, are marketed under names like Ozempic and Mounjaro. While they have contributed to a decrease in obesity rates, a new study published in Science Progress highlights a potential side effect: hair loss. The study found that hair loss was more prevalent among users taking higher doses for rapid weight loss. Dr. Paradi Mirmirani from the University of California San Francisco noted that while hair shedding can occur, it is usually temporary and manageable with proper nutrition and weight management. The study suggests that the hair loss may be linked to malnutrition due to reduced appetite, a side effect of the drugs.
