Harrogate Produce Store Faces Rising Fuel Costs, Maintains Steady Prices for Customers
In Harrogate, Tennessee, a local produce store, Harrogate Plants and Produce, is grappling with the rising costs of diesel fuel, which have significantly increased the expenses associated with transporting produce. Despite these challenges, the store is committed to keeping prices stable for its customers, many of whom come from low-income backgrounds across East Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia. Heather Spade-Lawson, a representative of the store, noted that the cost of watermelons has nearly doubled, with bins now priced at around $500 compared to the previous $280 to $300. The store is absorbing these additional costs to avoid passing them on to customers, who are already feeling the financial strain from increased fuel prices. Customers like Greg Baker, who travels from Virginia, appreciate the store's efforts to provide affordable produce, even as they face higher personal fuel expenses.
