Tropical Storm Bertha Makes Landfall with Limited Damage Expected
Tropical Storm Bertha has made landfall along the northern Gulf Coast, impacting areas from western Florida to southeastern Louisiana. The storm is bringing up to four feet of storm surge and sustained winds of up to 50 miles per hour. According to Phil Klotzbach, a senior researcher at Colorado State University, the storm is not expected to intensify due to strong wind shear from the northeast. Jamie Rhome, deputy director of the National Hurricane Center, noted that the wind shear is likely to keep the bulk of the storm offshore, reducing rainfall and the risk of significant flooding. A tropical storm watch remains in effect for New Orleans and the southern Gulf Coast of Louisiana, while a coastal flood warning has been issued for parts of Mississippi and Louisiana. Isolated flash flooding is possible in areas from western Florida to the upper Texas coast.
