Michigan Apprenticeship-Credit Program Helps Workers Apply Training Toward Degrees
The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity has launched the Michigan College Credit for Apprenticeships Program. This initiative allows individuals enrolled in registered apprenticeship programs to earn college credits for their on-the-job training. The program, introduced in 2025, is part of Michigan's broader strategy to increase the percentage of working-age residents with a degree or postsecondary credential to 60% by 2030. Currently, 51.8% of residents have achieved this, while college enrollment rates continue to decline. The program is designed to make higher education more accessible to working adults by recognizing the rigorous nature of apprenticeship training. Participants may need only one additional semester of coursework to earn an associate degree, depending on the apprenticeship and credits awarded.
