Households across Massachusetts are experiencing a significant increase in electricity bills, with some residents reporting jumps of approximately $100. This surge is attributed to several factors, including volatile natural gas costs, limitations in winter supply, an aging electrical grid, increasing demand for electricity, and the high cost of infrastructure improvements. The rising temperatures also contribute to higher bills as air conditioners run longer. For instance, a Brockton resident, Louisane Joseph, saw her electricity bill exceed $260 and was informed of another impending rate hike from her supplier. She found relief by switching to National Grid, which offered a lower rate and qualified her for income-based energy assistance. Community organizations, such as the Cape Verdean Association of Brockton, have been assisting numerous residents struggling with these escalating energy costs.
