Prolonged Sun and Heat Exposure Among Habits Dehydrating Skin, Expert Warns
Dr. Christopher Bunick, a dermatology physician-scientist at Yale School of Medicine, has highlighted several everyday habits that may silently contribute to skin dehydration. These include prolonged sun and heat exposure, lengthy or excessively hot showers, and the use of irritating chemical products. According to Dr. Bunick, these factors can disrupt the protein-lipid matrix of the skin barrier, which is essential for maintaining hydration and protecting against irritation and infection. He also emphasized that while drinking water is important for overall hydration, it does not directly address a compromised skin barrier. Instead, a comprehensive approach, including proper moisturizing and minimizing exposure to harmful conditions, is necessary to maintain healthy skin. The advice comes as melanoma, a common skin cancer in the U.S., is projected to see 112,000 new cases in 2026, underscoring the importance of sun safety and skin care.
