Virginia Confirms First Locally Acquired Dengue Case, Prompting Health Surveillance
Virginia has reported its first locally acquired case of dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral infection. The Virginia Department of Health confirmed that the patient, a Northern Virginia resident, had not traveled outside the state. It is believed that a local mosquito became infected after biting a traveler who had contracted dengue abroad, subsequently transmitting the virus to the patient. Dengue is spread by Aedes mosquitoes and can cause symptoms such as fever, severe headache, and rash. While most cases are mild, severe infections can lead to life-threatening complications. Health officials are conducting mosquito surveillance and monitoring for additional cases.
