18-Year-Old Wins $100,000 Science Fair Prize with Origami-Inspired Simulation Program
Hikaru Kuribayashi, an 18-year-old from Japan, won the top prize of $100,000 at the 2026 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. His project involved creating a simulation program that predicts complex folding outcomes, inspired by origami patterns found in nature. Kuribayashi's interest in origami began in childhood, influenced by his grandmother, and he later combined this passion with science. His program, developed using the Julia programming language, employs the Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm to estimate probable outcomes. The project aims to apply origami principles to engineering challenges, such as designing compact solar panels and portable emergency shelters. Kuribayashi's achievement highlights the intersection of art and science, showcasing how traditional art forms can inspire technological innovation.
