Nigerian Governors Aim to Replicate Benin's Agro-Industrial Model to Boost Local Economy
Six Nigerian state governors have committed to adopting the agro-industrial model of the Glo-Djigbé Industrial Zone (GDIZ) in Benin to enhance Nigeria's agricultural and industrial sectors. This decision follows a visit to the industrial hub near Cotonou, where agricultural commodities like cotton, cashew nuts, and soybeans are processed into finished products. The governors, including those from Imo, Zamfara, Plateau, Kwara, Katsina, and Jigawa, aim to implement similar Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) in Nigeria. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to transform agricultural value chains, reduce raw commodity exports, and create sustainable employment. The visit was led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasizing the importance of learning from successful industrial practices in other African countries.
