Representatives Sherman and Brownley Advocate for Stricter Santa Susana Field Lab Cleanup
U.S. Representatives Brad Sherman and Julia Brownley have sent a letter to the Department of Energy (DOE) reminding the agency of its cleanup obligations at the Santa Susana Field Lab (SSFL). This action follows meetings between staff for the representatives and Melissa Bumstead, founder of Parents Against Santa Susana Field Lab (PASSFL), as part of the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability. The SSFL, a 2,850-acre site in the Simi Hills, has been undergoing remediation for decades due to nuclear and chemical contamination from past research and operations. Boeing, which owns most of the property, is preparing to demolish five remaining buildings in Area IV and continues to transport contaminated soil from the Area I Burn Pit. The DOE is overseeing cleanup related to the former Energy Technology Engineering Center (ETEC), while NASA is managing its federal portion, Area II, and has received approval for the first phase of groundwater cleanup.
