Rising Nighttime Temperatures Pose Health Risks Amid Global Heatwaves
Global warming is causing nighttime temperatures to rise, with significant health implications. Recent heatwaves have led to record-breaking overnight lows, such as 32.4°C (90.3°F) in Delhi, India, and 29.4°C (84.9°F) in East Saxony, Germany. In the U.S., cities along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts experienced nighttime temperatures exceeding 27°C (80.6°F) in July 2026. Studies show that night-time heat disrupts sleep, with two-thirds of UK residents reporting difficulty sleeping during a June heatwave. Prolonged exposure to high nighttime temperatures has been linked to increased mortality and hospital admissions, particularly among vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.
