Michigan Attorney General Nessel Skips Party Convention Amid Antisemitism Concerns
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has decided to skip the upcoming state Democratic Party's nominating convention due to concerns about antisemitism and harassment. Nessel, who is Jewish, expressed her discomfort with attending the event, fearing that her presence would not be welcome and that she might face harassment. This decision follows a history of antisemitic incidents within the party, including a formal complaint Nessel filed against a party official who allegedly called her a neo-Nazi. The controversy arises amidst a heated primary between Rep. Haley Stevens, a pro-Israel advocate, and Abdul El-Sayed, a democratic socialist critical of Israel. The primary has been marked by significant spending from pro-Israel groups against El-Sayed. Additionally, previous incidents at the party's endorsement convention, where antisemitic slurs were reportedly directed at candidates, have heightened tensions.
