Severe Weather Outbreak Brings Tornadoes and Damaging Winds to Plains and Midwest
Severe thunderstorms are sweeping across parts of the Plains and Midwest, bringing damaging winds, hail, and tornadoes. According to FOX Weather and NOAA's Storm Prediction Center, wind gusts have reached up to 80 mph in some areas, with a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather threat issued for Michigan. The storms are fueled by an unstable atmosphere, creating conditions for powerful downdrafts and straight-line winds. Tornado warnings have been confirmed in Gage and Jefferson counties in Nebraska, where hail up to 2.75 inches has also been reported. Researchers from NOAA's National Severe Storms Laboratory are actively collecting data on these storms, particularly in central Kansas. Power outages are already widespread, with over 16,000 customers affected in Illinois. The severe weather is expected to persist into the evening and overnight hours.
