Flash Flooding Closes Roads and Access Points in New River Gorge National Park, West Virginia
Torrential rainfall has caused flash flooding, debris slides, and fallen trees, leading to the closure of several roads and recreation access points within New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in West Virginia. On Sunday, the road to Nuttallburg became impassable due to a large washout, while Cunard Road was blocked by a debris slide and downed trees, making the Cunard river access and Brooklyn campground inaccessible. Portions of Fayette Station Road and Glade Creek Road also remained closed. The damage follows another round of severe weather in Fayette County, where several inches of rain caused streams to overflow their banks and damaged private bridges. Park officials have urged visitors to exercise caution, especially in low-lying areas and roads descending into the gorge, and anticipate further updates as conditions evolve. More rain is expected, which could worsen the current situation.
