1966 Plymouth and Dodge Models Feature Iconic 426 Hemi Engine
The 1966 Plymouth and Dodge midsize models introduced the 426 Street Hemi engine, a detuned version of the race Hemi, available as an optional feature. This engine, rated at 425 horsepower, was a significant development for car enthusiasts and racers. The Street Hemi was equipped with race Hemi heads and new exhaust manifolds, making it a powerful option for street and track use. The engine's introduction led to a reversal of NASCAR's 1965 Hemi ban, allowing Hemi-powered cars to compete again. Notably, Richard Petty won the 1966 Daytona 500 with a Hemi-powered Plymouth.
