Meta to Appeal New Mexico Court Ruling on Social Media Harms to Teens
Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, plans to appeal a New Mexico court ruling that requires it to pay $567 million. The decision, made by a district court judge in Santa Fe, found that Meta's platforms contributed to mental health issues among teenagers, including depression and anxiety. The ruling is part of a larger lawsuit initiated by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, which accused Meta of creating a public nuisance through its social media platforms. The court's decision follows a previous jury verdict that fined Meta $375 million for violating the state's Unfair Practices Act. Meta argues that it has been transparent about the challenges of managing harmful content and remains confident in its efforts to protect teens online.
