Arkansas Family Discovers Stranger Living in Their Basement After Noticing Missing Items
An Arkansas family, led by Dutch Hoggatt, a professor at Harding University, discovered a stranger living in their basement after noticing missing items and moved furniture. The family became suspicious when Hoggatt's shoes disappeared, and they observed that chairs and food had been moved or were missing. On April 29, Hoggatt's daughter, Cherisse Gregory, her husband Mark, and Hoggatt's wife Sharon, armed with a baseball bat and gun, searched the house. Sharon found a man hiding in a storage area under the basement stairs. The man, identified as 41-year-old Preston Landis, was arrested and charged with residential burglary and theft of property. He had been living in the basement for days, making a makeshift bed in a storage closet. Despite the intrusion, the family expressed empathy, stating they were not angry and understood the man was trying to survive.
