National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Explores Ethical AI Adoption in Public Sector
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has collaborated with the Ada Lovelace Institute to investigate the ethical and governance implications of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its operations. NICE, an organization that provides guidance and advice on health and care technologies, partnered on a project titled 'The future of HTA with AI.' This initiative specifically focused on exploring how AI could be used within NICE's Health Technology Assessment Innovation Laboratory (HTA Lab) for processes such as evidence gathering and assessment. The research aimed to understand the governance, safeguards, and prioritization frameworks necessary for effective and legitimate AI adoption, with a broader scope to NICE as an organization. The findings indicate that public bodies, even those with significant methodological expertise, are in the nascent stages of evaluating AI's effective and legitimate use.
