Mayor Mamdani Targets Online Sales of Illegal E-Bikes Amid Safety Concerns
Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a crackdown on the online sale of illegal e-bikes and scooters in New York City. This decision follows a series of fatal accidents involving these devices, which have become popular since the pandemic. The city has issued 42 cease-and-desist orders to major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart, demanding they stop selling e-bikes that exceed the city's speed limit of 15 mph. The crackdown is part of a broader effort to address safety concerns while balancing the interests of food delivery workers and cycling advocates. City Council Speaker Julie Menin has also proposed 17 bills to regulate e-bikes, aiming to create safer streets for all users.
