New Mexico Courts Address AI-Generated Errors in Legal Filings
Courts in New Mexico have identified issues with AI-generated hallucinations in legal filings, affecting both self-represented litigants and attorneys. Since 2023, at least seven lawsuits have been impacted by false or misleading information generated by AI tools like ChatGPT. These errors have led to sanctions and warnings from judges. For instance, U.S. Magistrate Judge Damian Martínez highlighted a case where an attorney cited six nonexistent cases, attributing the errors to AI hallucinations. The New Mexico judiciary is now requiring any legal documents drafted with AI to disclose its use and verify the information through traditional methods. This move aims to prevent the waste of judicial resources and maintain the integrity of legal proceedings.
