UN Watch Criticizes Election of Human Rights Abusers to UN Committees
UN Watch has called on democratic countries to explain why nations with poor human rights records have been elected to key UN positions. The UN's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) recently nominated Iran to a committee involved in shaping policies on women's rights and terrorism prevention. Additionally, countries like China, Cuba, and Saudi Arabia have been elected to the Committee on NGOs. UN Watch's executive director, Hillel Neuer, criticized these appointments, likening them to putting criminals in charge of law enforcement. The organization argues that these decisions undermine the UN's credibility and the protection of human rights.
