Fourth Firefighter Dies Following Utah-Colorado Wildfire Incident
A fourth firefighter, Nathan Matthews, 43, of Lincoln, Nebraska, has succumbed to injuries sustained during a June 27 burn-over incident on the Utah-Colorado border. The Knowles Fire, which merged with the Snyder Fire, led to the deaths of three other members of the Rifle Helitack crew—Emily Barker, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson—at the scene. Matthews had been hospitalized for severe burns before passing away. The Snyder Fire has since been contained, but the wildfire season remains active across the western United States, with fire behavior exceeding seasonal expectations. A fifth firefighter was also injured in the incident, though their condition remains undisclosed. The Wildland Firefighter Foundation continues to support affected families and the firefighting community, which is grappling with the emotional toll of these losses.
