Bulgaria Seeks Parliamentary Approval for US Tanker Aircraft Deployment at Military Base
Bulgaria is seeking parliamentary approval to station up to eight U.S. tanker aircraft at the Bezmer military base, following a controversial attempt to place these aircraft at a civilian airport in Sofia without prior approval. The move aims to support U.S. military operations in the Middle East amid rising tensions with Iran. Prime Minister Rumen Radev emphasized the need for military airfields over civilian airports for such deployments. The Bezmer base, located 260 km southeast of Sofia, has received NATO-funded upgrades to enhance its capacity.
