Potential Super El Niño Could Bring Major Weather Shifts to New England in 2026
Forecasters are increasingly confident that a strong El Niño event will develop in 2026, with sea-surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific projected to rise 2.5 to 3.5 degrees Celsius above average by late year. According to NOAA and the World Meteorological Organization, there is a 62% likelihood of El Niño forming this summer, intensifying into a 'super El Niño' by autumn. This phenomenon, characterized by warmer-than-average ocean temperatures, could significantly alter global weather patterns, including those in New England. Historically, strong El Niño events have brought warmer and wetter conditions to the region, with increased humidity, heat waves, and more frequent storms. The last comparable event occurred in 2015-16, but the upcoming El Niño could surpass previous records due to rising baseline ocean temperatures linked to climate change.
