U.K. Man Pleads Guilty to $8 Million Virtual Currency Hacking Scheme Targeting U.S. Victims
Tyler Robert Buchanan, a 24-year-old from Dundee, Scotland, has pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal court to orchestrating a hacking scheme that stole $8 million in virtual currency from victims across the United States. The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Buchanan, along with several co-conspirators, conducted the scheme from September 2021 to April 2023. They used phishing messages to trick victims into providing personal information, which was then used to access virtual wallets and steal currency. The scheme targeted at least 45 companies in the U.S. and abroad. Buchanan faces a maximum penalty of 22 years in federal prison, with a sentencing hearing scheduled for August 21.
