FCC Restricts Foreign-Made Robotic Vacuums Over National Security Concerns
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has announced new restrictions on certain foreign-made robotic vacuum cleaners, citing national security and cybersecurity risks. These devices, including some Roomba-style models, are now included in the FCC's updated 'Covered List' rules, which prevent them from receiving FCC equipment authorization. The restrictions apply to newly authorized devices and do not affect existing models already in use by consumers. Major manufacturers such as iRobot, SharkNinja, Dyson, Samsung, and LG, which produce these vacuums primarily in China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia, are impacted by this decision. The FCC's action is part of a broader effort to secure U.S. critical infrastructure from potential foreign threats.
