British Columbia Implements New Laws to Curb Predatory Business Practices
British Columbia has enacted new consumer protection laws aimed at curbing predatory business practices, particularly those involving subscription services and high-pressure sales tactics. The amendments to the Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act require companies to provide clear and easy-to-understand contracts for subscription services, such as those offered by mobile phone providers, newspapers, and online streaming platforms. These companies must now give customers 30 to 60 days' notice before renewing a subscription and allow cancellations without penalty. Additionally, the new laws ban door-to-door sales of high-cost products like air conditioners and home security systems, and prevent companies from offering credit as part of direct sales. The changes are designed to protect consumers from aggressive sales tactics and ensure they can make informed decisions about their purchases.
