Air Quality Alerts Issued Across 11 States, Residents Urged to Stay Indoors
Millions of residents across 11 states in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Southern California are under air quality alerts due to elevated pollution levels. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the primary concern in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic is ground-level ozone, a key component of smog, exacerbated by hot, sunny conditions and high-pressure systems. In Southern California, wildfire smoke from active fires, such as the Sandy Fire near Simi Valley, is significantly degrading air quality. Alerts are in effect for major metropolitan areas, including New York City, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles, with conditions expected to remain hazardous through Tuesday evening. Vulnerable groups, such as children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing respiratory or heart conditions, are particularly at risk.
