China's Rare Earths Dominance Faces Global Challenge as Other Nations Boost Production
China's long-standing dominance in the rare earths mining industry is being challenged as other countries ramp up their production efforts. Historically, China controlled nearly all rare earth element mining and refining, but recent geopolitical strategies and the need for diversified supply chains have led to a significant shift. Currently, almost a third of global rare earth production occurs outside China. Countries like Australia and India are investing heavily in their rare earth industries, with Australia building a $1.8 billion refinery and India focusing on securing critical minerals in Africa. This global movement is driven by the discovery of new ionic-absorption clay deposits and the establishment of processing plants outside China, reducing reliance on Chinese supply chains.
