Research Identifies FNIP1 Gene Variant as Key to Metabolic Health Benefits
A recent study published in Nature has identified a rare genetic variant in the FNIP1 gene that is associated with significant metabolic health benefits. The research involved sequencing the genomes of over one million individuals across three continents to find genetic factors influencing metabolism and obesity. The FNIP1 gene acts as a brake on energy expenditure, and a rare mutation that switches off one copy of this gene provides protection against obesity, liver fat, and cardiometabolic diseases. The study found that individuals with this mutation have lower body fat, healthier liver profiles, and better blood sugar levels. Researchers are hopeful that targeting FNIP1 could lead to new treatments for heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.
