New York City Officials Launch Hip-Hop High School, Abandon AI-Focused Education Plans
Chancellor Kamar Samuels and Mayor Zohran Mamdani have announced the opening of a new School of Hip Hop in the Bronx, following the cancellation of plans for an AI-focused high school in Manhattan. The School of Hip Hop aims to provide 'innovative and culturally responsive instruction' by teaching hip-hop foundations, entrepreneurship, and civic engagement through music. This decision has sparked controversy, as critics argue that the school lacks academic rigor compared to the previously proposed Next Gen Tech school, which was to focus on math, science, and coding. The move has been criticized as a 'soft bigotry of low expectations,' with concerns that it may not adequately prepare students for future economic opportunities in AI and STEM fields.
