Florida Department of Transportation Invests Over $60 Million in Rail Safety Projects, Establishes Nation's Most Robust Standards
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has invested over $60 million in rail safety projects across the state since 2022. This initiative has led to the establishment of the most robust rail safety standards in the country, surpassing national benchmarks. These new standards incorporate advanced design elements such as upgraded pedestrian-activated warning systems, double-gates, and LED-enhanced signage. The FDOT is accelerating the implementation of these standards, partly due to a grant from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) aimed at revamping over 900 rail crossings, prioritizing locations with a high history of incidents. Additionally, FDOT has championed the creation and expansion of dynamic envelopes and piloted early train detection sensors in northeast Florida.
