California Unveils 2026 Extreme Heat Action Plan Amid Record Temperatures
California is experiencing unprecedented heat, with triple-digit temperatures recorded earlier than usual in 2026. Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the 2026 Extreme Heat Action Plan to address the growing threat of extreme heat, which scientists predict will worsen in the coming years. The plan focuses on four key areas: public awareness, community services, resilient infrastructure, and nature-based solutions. Efforts include expanding tools like CalHeatScore and the Vulnerable Communities Platform, increasing investments in urban greening and cooling infrastructure, and improving emergency response coordination. The state has also allocated nearly $32 million to 45 projects under the Extreme Heat and Community Resilience Program, with additional funding rounds planned. Extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the U.S., and California is taking proactive steps to mitigate its impacts.
